DIESEL (MARINE) MECHANIC
JOB SUMMARY
T&T Marine Salvage, Inc., an industry leader in marine services and emergency response, is looking for a marine diesel mechanic to maintain, diagnose, and repair diesel engines, compressors, heavy equipment, and a variety of assets.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience.
- Must own your own tools applicable to the position.
- Clean driving record and valid driver’s license required as a continuing condition of employment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Must be able to meet all physical qualifications per company guidelines.
- Must have Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or obtain one.
- Must be able to speak, read and write in the English Language.
- Must have a strong working knowledge of major brands marine diesel engine systems, installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement.
- Will be required to complete confined space entry (CSE) and 40 Hour OSHA Training.
- Knowledge of industry safety practices.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- The Marine Mechanic performs maintenance, diagnostics, disassembles, inspections, rebuilds, and reassemblies of all components of equipment on various marine vessels and land-based equipment (i.e., engines, power trains, hydraulics, fuel systems, power generation, pump systems, etc.) either in a shop or onboard a vessel, at dock or various locations, with or without supervision.
- Perform preventative maintenance on various mechanical equipment on an as needed basis both on and off vessels.
- Working independently to carry out assignments and determining what procedures and methods to use.
- Prepares Work Orders (WO) by describing symptoms, problems, and causes discovered, as well as repairs and services required; obtaining approval; Completing WO in service database system.
- Maintains awareness of safety issues and reports them immediately to supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- The ability to ride on ocean-going and inland water vessels, as well as walk and access vessels and barges, as needed, is required.
- A strong working knowledge of major brands marine diesel engine systems; installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement. (i.e. Caterpillar, John Deere and Cummins engines) is required.
- Advanced knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
- The knowledge and ability to troubleshoot both electrical and manual diesel engines.
- Knowledge of all aspects of current marine systems.
- The ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, such as, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical solutions is required.
- Strong verbal communication skills, to work effectively with crews, co-workers, vendors, and management team.
- Ability to handle stressful situations.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Basic computer skills such as: opening, creating, and updating content in MS Word documents and Excel spreadsheets is required.
- Positive team player with a “roll up your sleeves”, service-oriented attitude.
- Adhere to safety rules and regulations.
SHIFT INFORMATION
The standard work schedule for a Mechanic is Monday – Friday 7:00am to 3:45 pm with a 45-minute lunch break. May be required to work extended (> 8 hour) time periods. Travel, including overnight and extended periods, may be required.

This position works in a non-climate-controlled shop setting, onboard vessels and outdoors in the field. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to noisy.
